Carol S. Myers, 91, of Oblong, IL died at 11:30pm on March 7, 2019 at Crawford Memorial Hospital in Robinson, IL. Carol was born on May 29, 1927 the daughter of Clarence Ray and Priscilla Sylvia Smith, both of whom preceded her in death. As a young woman she married Charles O. Henry who preceded her in death. In 1951 she married Leland J. Spaugh, and together they raised their children: Charles Roger Henry of Plant City, FL; Michael Lee Henry of rural Robinson, IL; and Kathy Maureen St. Germain, who preceded her in death in 2003. After Leland’s death in 1980, Carol later married William Eugene Myers, who preceded her in death.

Carol was born on a farm in the Bend area, lived some of her early years in Hammond, IN, and returned and lived in Oblong for many years, lastly living in Elm Lawn, just east of Oblong.

Carol was very active in the Oblong area for many years. She had a ‘nose for news’ and worked as a reporter for: the Oblong Oracle, the Oblong Gem, and the Robinson Daily News. She and her camera could be found at all Oblong events and public meetings and was once voted as Oblong’s Woman of the Year. She loved being with and getting to know people and letting her community know how special they all were.

Carol had always been blessed with musical talents. At a very young age she learned to play the piano by ear…an art she loved and loved sharing. She also played the trombone in high school, and later the violin and the organ. She played piano for the Oblong Cornerstone Wesleyan Church until the end of 2018, and enjoyed playing for the residents of Heritage Health while a resident there herself, following a hip replacement in 2014 and a broken ankle in January of this year. She also played at Ridgeview Care many times when her church provided Sunday services.

Carol loved to cook and did so every day up until her broken ankle. She always cooked “good stuff” and often furnished meals for her sisters, friends and neighbors, and of course family. For years she has cooked for Michael and Judy on Monday evenings, following her meal with a card game…she was very competitive.

Carol was preceded in death by: her parents; husbands; daughter; sisters Karen Elaine Smith, Roni Spencer, and Gracie Good; brothers-in-law Silas Bennett, John Spencer, Pete (Pepsi) Spaugh, and Arthur Good; a special and loving daughter-in-law, Judy Kay Henry.

Carol is survived by: her son Charles Roger Henry, her son Michael Lee Henry and daughter-in-law Judy Elaine Henry; grandchildren Michael Todd (Bethany) Henry of Lincoln IL, Kristi Michele (Danny) Schaffner of Champaign IL, and Jamison David Lackey of Effingham IL; great-grandchildren Waylon Leon (Rebecca)Schaffner, Ricky Lee Schaffner, Noah Klay Henry, Caden Michael Schaffner, Haven Grace Henry, and Broderick Olen Schaffner; great-great-grandchildren Abigail Mae Schaffner and Logan Michael Schaffner (mother, Sarah Schaffner) and Autumn Woods; sisters Charlotte Bennett and Retha Spaugh of Oblong; and numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces.
